1885 - The Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor.
1943 - Barry Manilow was born (Barry Alan Pincus). He is an American singer, songwriter, arranger, musician and producer. His career has spanned more than 50 years. Some of his famous songs: Mandy, Could It Be the Magic, I Write the Songs, Copacabana, Looks Like We Made It, Can't Smile Without You. He has has 46 Top 40 singles and many multi-platinum albums. He's sold more than 75 million records worldwide.
1980 - Vanessa Williams was born (Vanessa Ebony Starr Williams). She is an American tennis player and one of the all-time greats of women's tennis. She ranked #1 in the world three times for a total of 11 weeks. She's won 4 Olympic gold medals and 1 silver in mixed doubles. She has 49 singles titles.
