Don't know if anybody in this community knows the history of this holiday. I myself did not learn about it until I moved my family to Austin, Texas. It's an American holiday and it's called "Juneteenth".
What's the story behind this holiday?
Evidently, the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. But back then they didn't cable or radio or phones. So the word of FREEDOM RINGS did not reach the slaves in Texas until years later. They did not know they had been declared free people until June 19, 1865.
"Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America." (Source: Wikipedia)
FYI. "The Emancipation Proclamation, or Proclamation 95, was a presidential proclamation and executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863." (Source: Wikipedia)
So in Texas, we celebrate Juneteenth.
Other states don't celebrate this day in history. In fact, Texas has a few specific holidays that none of the other states celebrate. Juneteenth is just one of them.
Anyway! If there is anybody here celebrating the day Happy Juneteenth!!

Side Note: Today on Twitter Juneteenth is a trending hashtag. That makes sense. But it's trending with: Khashoggi, and Hope Hicks. (O.o) I didn't quite get the A.I. connection. But when I Googled "Juneteenth", an article in USA Today about Hope Hicks showed up in the search results too.

Since today would have been my dads birthday; his brothers would make fun of him because of this.If my dad was still alive; he would have been 76 today.

My dad passed away many years ago. We were never sure about my dad's birthday or his age. He came here from another country and we never saw his birth certificate. Why would your brothers make fun of your dad? (O.o)

Took two and a half YEARS to get the news out?
Or, just two months after the war ended....

2 years, 2 months. That's not near as long as that Japanese guy who was stranded and did not know the war was over. Even when people tried to tell him, he didn't believe it!
A Japanese soldier who refused to surrender after World War Two ended and spent 29 years in the jungle dies aged 91 in Tokyo.
