August 1951 - The Korean War - 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) - 3 miles from the front lines Colonel Henry Blake, commanding officer, tells Corporal Radar O'Reilly to get word to Brigadier General Charles Hammond in Seoul that the 4077th needs two more surgeons. Originally from Maine, Captain Hawkeye Pierce is on the last leg of his journey to the 4077th. He is sitting in a Jeep, waiting for the driver. Captain Duke Forrest approaches the Jeep, confirms that it's going to the 4077th and orders Pierce to take him there. Hawkeye says, "OK", and roars out of the compound. Hawkeye and Forrest are rebellious, womanizing, mischievous rule-breakers. They arrive at the officers' mess tent and decide to have lunch. Colonel Blake goes over to see who these two new guys are. The Colonel tells Pierce that he's received a message that a Jeep was stolen from Headquarters. Pierce says he didn't steal it...it's right out there. Radar tells the Captains that he will change the ID number on the "stolen" Jeep. The Colonel reprimands the Captains for not following proper regulations for reporting to a unit. Radar leads them to their tent that they will share with Major Frank Burns, an inferior surgeon. Eventually, Trapper John McIntyre will join the group and the "Swamp" will be complete. Later, in the Operating Room (OR), Hawkeye is preparing to saw off a soldier's lower leg while Captain Forrest is hitting on one of the nurses. M*A*S*H is a 1970 movie from which the TV series was adapted which ran from 1972-1983. The only actor from the TV series that is in the movie is Gary Burgoff who plays Corp. Radar O'Reilly. This is a funny movie; but I personally prefer the TV series and the actors in the TV series. This movie is rated R. Photo Credit: Free Images

The movie was based on a book by a doctor who served at the 8055th during the Korean War. Honestly, although I love the series, I was never crazy about the movie. There were a couple of funny moments (when they raised the flaps on the shower tent while Hot Lips was showering), but most of the movie was a series of episodes instead of a coherent, single-plot film. It’s not surprising that it became a TV series.

There's a big difference between Robert Altman and Larry Gelbart.
