1859 - French acrobat Charles Blondin crosses Niagara Falls on a tightrope.
1937 - The world's first emergency telephone number, 999, is introduced in London.
1966 - Mike Tyson was born. He was an American boxer and actor. He competed in the ring from 1985-2005 and reigned as the world's heavyweight champion. Tyson's record: Total Fights 58, Wins 50, Wins by KO 44, Losses 6, No Contests 2.
1985 - Michael Phelps was born. He is a retired American swimmer. He is the most successful and most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 medals, 23 of them gold.

My guess would be "yes"; but I can ask my high school chum that lives in London.

@andriaperry Yes, 999 is still the emergency number. They have added 111 as a non-life threatening emergency number because they were getting overwhelmed with people that were misusing the 999 number.
