Digital Footprint and Privacy

As you can probably tell from how old my myLot account is, I have been into writing for a long time. Life will throw me a curve ball and I will have to drop writing during my “free time”, but I always go back to it once I gain control of my life again. I like sharing stories, writing reviews, and offering advices especially if it will help someone. With the advent of technology and online journals, it is not surprising that I have dabbled in these media.
However, I have huge concerns about leaving my footprint in the web and end up having my privacy compromised. Even with this myLot account, I dare not use my personal photo. I like the anonymity, but I also realize that my relativity to someone’s situation can be diminished for lack of actual personal information. I can also say that I am insecure when getting my picture taken – I believe that I don’t look good in pictures and so I rarely take one much less share one in public forum.
Aside from the basic online defense of not sharing confidential and contact information online, what else do you do to protect your privacy? If you are someone who maintains an online business or profession, how do you promote your products or services without leaving a trace of your personal identity online for hackers or snoops to dig on?
