Sunday's Fire

Last Sunday I was headed to my car to run some errands. I heard a fire cracker and I turned around and there was three teen-age boys coming from a weedy area and headed to an apartment here. I got to the car and remembered something I had forgot so I headed back to my apartment. I looked up and there was fire at the end of the street, right where the boys had been. The boys and a lady were there trying to put the fire out. I rushed inside and called 911. I told the lady dispatcher what was going on she started asking all kinds of questions and I was answering them as fast as I could. I informed her that there was a house just to the east and she wanted to know how many feet away. Finally I asked her if she could just send someone out. After we got off the phone a fire truck showed up. They checked it out then got out the hose. They hosed down the area for about five minutes. The police came and talked to the boys and the woman. I don't know what happened cause I left. I wonder if the boys or the woman would of ever called for help. I'm just glad that I seen it and called as fast as I could. We did have a wind and I didn't want it to spread.

That's so good that you were there to call 911. It could have been much worse.

Thanks Ruby. I am glad that I had to come back to my apartment. Otherwards I would of drove away and probably never seen it. I was so afraid it was going to get out of control and get to the house to the east.

You did the right thing and possibly saved someone's home from being destroyed from a fire. I hope the boys learned a lesson from that adventure.

Thank you so much. I hope they learned a lesson too. The way the wind was blowing it wouldn't of been long and it would of been in those peoples yard.

@velvet53 If one can't get water, dirt might help.

i'm glad ya saw such'n acted quickly to call. those folks would'a most likely not done so 'til such'd gotten outta hand. hopefully those folks were't the very least fined. i'm thinkin' community service'd be'n order fer all 3.

when I seen them up there throwing dirt on the fire I figured they didn't call for help so I did. Dispatch toldme that I was the only one that reported it. I don't know if they got a fine or not. I hope that they did.

@crazyhorseladycx Thank you so much. I have used dirt on a fire before but tuen would drown it with water. I don't know if they got a ticket or has to appear in court. They do need something like community service for what they did.

@velvet53 throwin' dirt? such can be effective if'n ya thrown 'nough, but then still needs a good waterin'. mercy...'tis 'lways best to make that call than presume somebody else's done so. kudo's to ya! yup, hope the 3 get to 'ppear 'fer a judge'n get't the very least community service fer their actions. if'n not, those youngsters'll jest test the limits more. next time mightn't be so lucky.

I'm glad the fire department showed up quickly to put the fire out. It may have seemed small at the time, but a brisk wind could have whipped that thing up into an inferno in a split second.

That is what I was afraid of. At one time when dispacth asked how big the flames were I couldn't tell her cause all I could see was heavy black smoke.

@moffittjc That makes sense. I was calling from my landline but the info I gave her was very clear. I old her which apartment complex I live in, that is was north of Walnut Ave on 19th street which is only 2 blocks long, I gave her the side street where the fire was and I told her what school we were north of. I am not upset because they did get here pretty fast. I just couldn't understand all the questions when I could of been up there helping.

@velvet53 In the past, part of the reason they kept asking so many questions was to keep you on the line as long as possible, so that their mapping system could pinpoint where you were calling from. Nowadays, with the technology they have, they should be able to determine pretty quickly your location based on the GPS location of the cell phone you are calling from (most people call from cell phone nowadays, not landlines).

Thanks George. I just wish I had gone up there and helped to put the fire out. But the call had to be made first.

More damage may be incurred if there are delays in responding help. Don't worry. You've done your part.

@velvet53 That's one thing and more houses would be burned. Here in our place where a community is thickly populated and houses are mushrooming and they seem to be closed each other. One single fire could raze those houses down.

@sophie09 I hope I never have to go through this again. Awhile back we had a little girl fall into the canal just feet away from the fire was. Than goodness she was rescued.
