1863 - The United States begins its first military draft; exemptions cost $300.
1928 - Sliced bread is sold for the first time, on the inventor's 48th birthday, in Chillicothe, Missouri.
1927 - Doc Severensen was born. He is a former American trumpet player and conductor. He was the conductor for the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson band from 1967 until 1992 when Carson retired.
1940 - Ringo Starr (Sir Richard Starkey) was born. He is an English singer, songwriter, drummer and actor. He is best-known for being the drummer for the Beatles from 1962-1970. Some of his lead vocal songs are With a Little Help from My Friends, Yellow Submarine, Act Naturally, Octopus's Garden and Don't Pass Me By. After the Beatles broke up in 1970 he continued on as a solo artist.
1949 - Shelly Duvall was born. She is a former American actress, writer, producer and singer. Her most memorable roles were in Popeye (1980) and The Shining (1980).
