Going Nuts

Norwich, England

While I was at the bottom of my garden this afternoon I noticed that our hazelnuts are huge this year. Last year we had plenty of them on the tree but much smaller than this year. Unfortunately the squirrels managed to get the majority of them last year but here's hoping that, by the time they're ripe, they;ll be so big that the squirrels will either be unable to lift them because they're too heavy or perhaps they'll be too big for them to hold in their tiny little paws. Well, I can dream can't I?

@olliesmum I am sure the birds love these fruits. Yes you have to make a choice with nature.

We planted a hazel and a cherry a few years back. Unfortunately the birds take the majority of the cherries and the squirrels take the hazelnuts but I suppose we're doing our bit for the wildlife!!

Our cat's quite good at catching them but sometimes there are just too many for him to cope with. Having said that, it's nice to know that the squirrels have a good feast before the winter. Helps them to survive the cold.
