Paris Is Burning is probably the most popular Documentary detailing the the Ball scene of New York City where many drag queens, and LGBTQ individuals performed in balls, if you have ever seen the new show Pose this is the basis of the show, in fact one of the very few men still surviving from the show helped the director Ryan Murphy recreate many of the stories surrounding the original stars of the film.
Sadly all but two of the 12 stars of the Documentary have passed on, many of them from very tragic circumstances.
Doris Corey - perhaps the most well known from the film was an aged drag performer, whom mostly narrated the stories, and gave history to the culture, she is perhaps more famously known for the fact after her death a mummified body was found in a suitcase in her closet, per rumor it was a former lover or john of hers and it's thought she killed him and her only thought to do was wrap him up and cover the body with baking soda for the smell and wrap it tightly.... he had been dead 15 years when the body was discovered. On a episode of Pose they recreated a version of her story when Elektra's john died during a S&M session due to drugs, and Elektra and others disposed of his body by hiding him in a suitcase.
Venus Xtravaganza - Sadly passed away before completion of the film, she was murdered as her body was discovered strangled on Christmas Day 1988 it is believed her body lay undiscovered for four days. On Pose the character of Candy died in similar fashion.
The movie is a classic and still fitting of the times, sadly young people in the trans community are still murdered everyday, so many it is so saddening hearing there stories, and watching films like this detailing there loss.
I have began watching more of these films telling the history, and so much of what people in the LGBTQ community went through
