National Tequila Day National Tell an Old Joke Day 1935 - The Dust Bowl heat wave reaches its peak, sending temperatures to 109 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius) in Chicago and 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) in Milwaukee. 1969 - Apollo 11 splashes safely down in the Pacific Ocean. 1897 - Amelia Earhart was born. She was an American pilot and author. She was the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many records and wrote many best-selling books about her experiences. During an attempt to fly around the world in 1937 Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean. 1946 - Gallagher is an American comedian and prop comic.
