weird food choices

Growing up we didn't have a lot of money so we made do with what we had on hand and this also went for food. My mom was raised in a very poor family with a lot of kids so my grandma also had them eating certain things that most people find gross or weird and in turn my mom made these foods for us. We never starved but there were times where we didn't have a lot on hand and we lived in a small town out in the country so we couldn't just make a quick journey to the store especially if our car was broken down as it was from time to time so we ate a lot of sandwiches. My mom made toast and tomato which is exactly what it sounds like. She made toast and buttered it and put some tomato on it and added a bit of salt to it and we ate this a lot for breakfast. I still like to eat the occasional toast and tomato sandwich. It's really not a lot different than a BLT other than you don't have bacon or lettuce. I also remember we ate a lot of peanut butter and pickle sandwiches which I found out later a lot of people were grossed out by but others also ate this and we'd talk about what other people were missing. Some things just aren't for everyone. Some of us like weird food combinations and that's ok. I think it goes back to the way you are raised. I have met a few people who eat certain foods that I eat that a lot of people consider weird and I've found people who eat stuff I find disgusting. I am one of those people who like pineapple on pizza and I make no apologies. I like what I like and I figure if people don't like it they don't have to eat it. I mean most of the argument is in good humor but you get the occasional person who is an actual jerk about it and takes life way too seriously. I think it's like with a lot of things where most of us joke with people about it but we aren't actually angry about it we personally find the idea of it disgusting but as the saying goes to each their own.

When I got married, my husband thought it was really weird to eat banana sandwiches.

I've had peanut butter and banana sandwiches and had them grilled too which actually aren't bad and I don't even care much for bananas. My mom makes peanut butter and tomato sandwiches which I just can't eat.

@1creekgirl Right there with you. We used to grow our own tomatoes when I was a kid. We had a vegetable garden and we grew a lot of our own vegetables which saved a lot of money and our tomatoes were so sweet and while I loved them I'd never pair them with peanut butter.

I know what you mean. We were not rich growing up either. My father worked 16 hours shifts and my mother and grandmother used to make due with what we had. Although living in a big city, going to the store wasn't an issue. We ate lots of pasta because it was cheap, and believe it or not, chicken was cheap back then as well as veal. Not anymore.

Pasta to this day is my go-to when we don't have anything else to eat at home and are low on funds. It's a good way to stretch a dollar. Chicken can still be cheaper than ground beef at times depending on what you get. Ground beef has really gone up in price. We now shop for deals on meat. My dad has always been a decent cook so we never starved but sometimes when we were low on food my parents would make easy things like I mentioned. I still eat the occasional toast and tomato sandwich or peanut butter and pickle sandwich because it was just part of my childhood and I like the taste having grown up eating it. My mom also liked peanut butter and tomato sandwiches which I could never get the taste for and still find gross. My husband, however, likes it and doesn't like toast and tomato but he does like peanut butter and pickle and apparently ate it as a kid too and his parents had money.

@sissy15 I use pasta as a goto also. But I am not supposed to have all those carbs being diabetic. And also, I had a heart attack last October. And eating certain fats and oils I cannot have. That makes it harder for me. I eat beef once in awhile. But even that is not good. I do eat peanut better and jelly sometimes and also tuna fish. Quick and easy things to make on a budget.

@inertia4 My mom eats a lot of stuff she shouldn't and she is diabetic but not having money does make it harder to eat healthier. She doesn't eat much meat so it also limits what she'll eat. The only kind of meat she'll eat is ground beef or hot dogs from time to time and even then not much. Most meat makes her gag. She also has heart issues so she is super limited on what she can or will eat. She eats a lot of peanut butter and jelly and is tired of it. She eats chili and tacos with a little ground beef but barely any. She will only eat all beef hot dogs. She's just odd about what she eats. We do a lot of cheaper meals. Pasta, rice, hot dogs or we'll go find what's on sale and plan dinner around it.

I guess it's an acquired taste. My husband doesn't like them either but likes peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. My mom also likes peanut butter and tomato sandwiches but that still grosses me out but my husband likes them too. I just can't.
