Pasta comes in a huge variety of shapes and sizes and can either be fresh or dried. I am guessing that you have bought the dried pasta. There are long kinds, like spaghetti (round in section, like a pencil lead) and linguine (flat in section), and short kinds, such as macaroni (little tubes, often bent into an elbow shape), fusilli (twisted) and those shaped like little shells or ears. Each one is designed for a different kind of sauce: spaghetti is often associated with a tomato-based meat sauce called Bolognese, linguine is often served with a creamy sauce which may have mushrooms or bacon in it, macaroni is most often made with a cheese sauce and baked in a dish in the oven.
To cook pasta, it's best to follow the instructions on the packet. Most will require boiling in plenty of water for 12 to 15 minutes. The best way of telling when it's done is to take a piece and bite it between the teeth. Like properly cooked rice, it should have a slight resistance to your bite but should neither be crunchy in the middle nor soft all the way through.
You can find recipes online for Spaghetti Bolognese or Macaroni Cheese, depending on which kind you have. Both are very simple to make.
