What's the best way to advertise in newspaper?

I once advertised my rooms to let. I wrote my address, descriptions of the room and my phone number to contact me. The first person to contact me said he was interested in the rooms. I said if that if he was interested, just come over to have a look first. He said not necessary; the room was for is daughter and he wanted the payment by transferring the cost to my bank account. So, he asked my bank account. I was suspicious as I had heard similar deceptions by sending payment via ATM. Then I was sure it was a deception, so I gave him the account that had no money in it. He said he'd transfer it, so I waited. An hour later he texted me that he had transferred the payment. I checked the account balance in the ATM. And as expected, no money came. About 10 minutes later he phoned me and asked if I had checked the balance. I told him yes but no money came into my account. He suggested checking again and he would give me direction to check it. I knew it. This is how he would steal one's money. I told him that it was useless as my bank account was zero. After this he never contacted me again. Did you ever have such experience?
