Yesterday I took the day off from posting in memory of Gil (GoAskAlex). I certainly didn’t plan it, but today’s song that features Don Henley as a guest vocalist seems appropriate as we mourn our loss here at myLot. Here’s today’s song...which I think JJ’s been waiting for.
#4: Help Me Through the Night - Joe Walsh
Back in 1974 Joe was Joe and the Eagles were the Eagles. Having the hard-rocking Walsh and the country-rock Eagles together just seemed....weird.
And yet, the genesis of Walsh’s entry into the Eagles seems to have begun in 1974. Walsh produced Dan Fogelberg’s Souvenirs album, which featured Don Henley and Glenn Frey on various songs. And, on Walsh’s third post-James Gang album, we have not only the Henley/Frey vocal machine backing Walsh on one of his most beautiful ballads, but we also have Walsh and Henley writing a song together (“Falling Down”).
So What has a lot of pain on it. The closing track, “Song for Emma,” is for Walsh’s daughter, who was killed in a car wreck. This song also has a tremendous melancholy feel to it. Walsh was suffering at this point in his life, and you can tell it.
Would Walsh have joined the Eagles had this adventure not happened? I don’t know, but I do know that it shows the match was far better than one might have expected....and that turned out to be correct on a lot of levels.
