To go on vacation or spend time with parents?

I have been away from home for quite some time. It took me a while getting used to living by myself. Have to learn how to cook, do laundry, grocery, do household chores. But with my busy schedule, i always think of the best way to spend my holiday break. I would really like to go and travel to different countries like Korea and Japan seeing how nice these places are in videos. But the fact that i haven't seen my parents for a while makes me feel guilty. It is quite tough to do so especially when my mom has cancer and it does not seem right choosing to spend holidays traveling rather than spending time with my family. But when i go home to my family, i would just be staying home and be lazy. There's actually not much to do there. What would you do if you were in my place?

I live 8 hours away by plane from my hometown. My parents are able to travel and the are coming to visit me for a short time this Christmas. But then I would just be taking them around the city where i currently live. Nothing interesting here for me to see because i am here everyday, but it's something different for them to visit.

@cyclopz i mean is your hometown away from the city? because you say there's not much to do there. or since they're able to travel, maybe meet your parents somewhere visa-free here in asia. (aside from their xmas visit to you later in the year). you still get to see them but also experience new things.

I think that is the first thing my parents would expect me to do. I haven't been home for more than 3 years and i think it would be quite boring for me because i got used to the very busy life i currently have.

I can understand you feeling guilty especially if your mum has been ill. Can you not fit both in?

I used to be like you. Now, I am working online at home. There is no need to be lazy for me.

I think that is really a very ideal scenario that you won't even have to leave home for work. I could imagine how it feels staying bed while doing work then possibly fall asleep easily. :)

I'd spend time with my parents and travel afterwards. You deserve a break, too

Why don't you do both? Even if your holidays aren't very long, you can surely divide them into two parts. Don't choose a trip to a foreign 'country', concentrate on a city you're interested in. Some days in a foreign city will be enough to fill you with new experiences. Then visit your parents and tell them about your trip. This will cheer your mother up. Bring her a nice souvenir.
