New Tires!

There are things that are necessary when you own a car. One of those things is blowing a lot of money on new tires once every 40,000 to 80,000 miles (depending on how the tires are rated, how well you take care of them [regular rotations and alignments], etc.).
On my recent trip to Tennessee I clicked over the 40,000 mile mark on my car, so I knew it’d be time soon. Sure enough, I checked my tires and I could see the top of Washington’s head on the quarter. (Quick aside: even the diagnostic test has suffered from inflation: it used to be you used a penny, and if you could see the top of Lincoln’s head the tread was too worn!)
To confirm that it was time to take the $800 plunge, my oil change advisory came on. (They used to call those “idiot lights,” but with the way cars are today, the car computer monitors the life of the oil and lets you know when it’s time for a change.) So, off to the local tire store I went.
Ken Towery’s is a local chain of tire/car maintenance stores. There are stores all over town (and even reaching to Lexington, some 80 miles from us). I passed three on the way to my appointment this morning.
WHY? Because the store I went to is located next to an Olive Garden!!!
So, the tires are replaced, the oil is changed, balance and alignment of the new tires have been performed, and I’m good for another 60,000 miles.
Or until the bill arrives in the mail.
The appropriate song, written by the great Jack Tempchin:

My grandfather taught me engine repair on a 1948 5hp Evenrude boat motor.
I open the hood now and I couldn't even tell you what I was seeing other than the battery!

@DocAndersen Nor can I blame you. Back before the computers were melded into the car engines, I had no issue changing plugs, a water pump, a radiator, a u-joint. It just required a few hours of time and the willingness to get my hands dirty. It isn't that easy now days. Well, maybe a u-joint is, but the rest, you are dealing with computer systems. One wrong move and the cost will be much higher than if you had just taken it to the shop to begin with.

I'd rather not have a car. The maintenance cost is high. At least that's for the time being.

I am on the same boat. I hit over 40k and needing an oil change real soon too.
Need to get tires really soon. Not really exciting about shopping for tires because it will be like $800 too
