1893 - France becomes the first country to introduce motor vehicle registration.
1935 - Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Social Security Act, creating an income system for the retired.
1945 - Steve Martin was born. He is an American actor, comedian, musician, producer, author and screenwriter. In the 1960s he was a writer for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. He was a frequent guest on the Tonight Show and toured as a stand-up comedian. Some of his movies included: The Jerk, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Man With Two Brains, Three Amigos!, Planes Trains and Automobiles (see below), Roxanne, L. A. Story, Father of the Bride, The Out-of-Towners, Shopgirl and It's Complicated.
1947 - Danielle Steel was born. She is an American author. She is the bestselling author alive and the fourth bestselling fiction author of all time. She has written 179 books and sold 800 million copies.
