On 14 Aug the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of St. Maximilian Kolbe. He was a Franciscan Friar and priest who was imprisoned by the Nazis at Auschwitz. He died on 14 Aug 1941 after offering to take the place of another prisoner who was scheduled to be executed by being starved to death but who had a wife and children.

Besides him, Edith Stein, a Catholic nun, and one other man whose name escapes me at the moment, also gave their lives in place of another at one of the concentration camps.

I think he is someone who should be a candidate for sainthood personally.

He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1981.
