These Ladies were bad!

Esther Eggers, however, looked like she would gladly do it again... These photos were taken by Australian police when mugshots were first becoming a thing. I rather like these all of these ladies, and I wonder about the ladies charged with bigamy (getting married whilst already being married). I wonder if those charged with Bigamy had husbands that walked out on them? Perhaps they were just trying to survive in a world where women still had very little rights.

The crime of Bigamy? It was a different time then. I think most of those ladies were just trying to survive in the world. I think the women who committed bigamy had their husbands deserting them. They were only doing what they could to survive.

@JustBhem They most likely couldn't. If their husbands left them without saying anything, just left town and never came back? Then there was no officially ending the relationship. Divorce wasn't easy back in those times.

@ScribbledAdNauseum But at least they should have ended their relationship with their husbands

It is hard to say sometimes what drives human behavior.

Desperation, I think, atleast for some of these ladies.

That's interesting. You can fully understand the temptation for a woman to re-marry illegally in circumstances when divorce is far from easy.

Yes, I was thinking of situations where the man deserts her. It might have been that these ladies had children and needed to remarry out of necessity.
