International Homeless Animals' Day - Today shelters across the nation are pushing to have as many animals adopted as possible. Locally I know that they are staying open longer and reducing their adoption fees. National #2 Pencil Day 1908 - The first animated cartoon is shown in Paris, France. 2008 - American swimmer Michael Phelps becomes the first person to win 8 gold medals at one Olympic Games. 1893 - Mae West was born. She was an American actress, playwright and screenwriter. The American Film Institute named her the #15 greatest female star of classic American cinema. She was very controversial. She said, "I believe in censorship. I made a fortune out of it." A few of her best known movies are She Done Him Wrong, I'm No Angel, Klondike Annie and My Little Chickadee (with W. C. Fields). She died in 1980. 1958 - Belinda Carlisle was born. She is an American singer/songwriter famous for being the lead singer of the Go-Go's, one of the most successful all-female bands in history. Some of their best known hits: We Got the Beat (see below), Our Lips Are Sealed and Head Over Heels. Carlisle went on to have a successful solo career after the Go-Go's broke up. 1960 - Sean Penn was born. He is an American actor, director, filmmaker and political activist. He won an Academy Award for Mystic River and Milk. Some of his other movies: Carlito's Way, Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown and I Am Sam. Photo Credit: Pixabay
