I have a question about Qi wireless charging.

Does anyone know if it's possible to charge a phone with a wireless charging dock through a metal plate and otterbox case? I'm wondering if my wireless charger is too weak or if the metal plate is interfering with it. The metal plate is for magnetic mounting in my car, so I don't wish to remove it.

Yes, a metal plate between the charger and the phone will seriously interfere with charging. A wireless charger works by having an oscillating magnetic field which induces current in coils inside the phone. If you put a metal plate between the phone and the charger, you will block most, if not all, of the power. The same applies if you put a magnetic backing on the phone case.

Wow, great response and very educating answer. I appreciate the insight. I guess it's either take the plate off or stick to wired charging. Thanks again!

That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't too sure. I love the idea of wireless charging but I enjoy my magnetic mount a lot more.

@mrki444 I agree. I was wanting to be "lazy" and find a quick drop and charge way kinda like the metal plate on the back where it's drop and mounted in my car lol
