“The Love Cats” was the commercial breakthrough at least in the UK for the legendary new wave/alternative/goth band. The song was the Cure’s first UK hit at #7 and while uncharted in the US, received major airplay on US alternative radio. The quirky tune has bass sounding like a cat’s padding feet.
Who knows what “The Love Cats” is really about and there are theories like lead singer Robert Smith wrote the song during an LSD trip. Or that It is about a suicide pact by two lovers inspired by a story by Australian author Patrick White whom Smith was reading at the time. Perhaps Smith deliberately wrote a more mainstream song to succeed or a sarcastic response to the goth label. The single later appeared on the compilation album “Japanese Whispers.”
