My Grandfather's Affliction

I normally don't like to talk about this, but since I mentioned in an earlier post that my father's father was schizophrenic, I thought it might be helpful to other people if I wrote more on it. My father's father (my paternal grandfather, obviously) had delusions. Some stories I've heard were that he thought the Biblical figures Paul & Silas were his best friends. When he was medicated, he was fine, but then he'd get off his meds (because he thought he was cured) and have relapses. My father (at the young age of like 6) knew his father had conversations w/people who weren't there. @ Some point after that I believe, granddad was committed to the V.A. hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL where he was a residential patient for a good chunk of his life.

Interesting to read about this. I had relatives with mental illness. The treatment years ago was sometimes bizarre.

Yeah, I have heard of something called "insulin therapy" where some schizophrenic patients were basically put into medically induced insulin shock. I know John Forbes Nash (the subject of "A Beautiful Mind") was subjected to it. I'm not quite sure what it was supposed to do exactly besides induce coma.

@jnrdutton I think they just didn't know how to treat the patient so they tried whatever they had to treat the illness.

@CarolDM Probably. Many parts of the brain (and many neurological illnesses) are STILL a mystery to this day. I think as we (society at large) learn more, treatments of these types of illnesses will get better.
