You are a slave if...

...you give more than a third of your day to your job. I've read about this somewhere. I really don't agree though. If you actually enjoy what you're doing and you find purpose in what you do for a living, then you're not slaving away. For me, the time you allot for your job isn't wasted even if you decide to work overtime IF at the end of the day, you find yourself feeling fulfilled and happy. IF it is a stressful job though --- maybe, just maybe, you have to find a new one.

I think as long as you enjoy your job (and are being properly paid for the work you do) then you aren't wasting your day. However, there are far more people who aren't happy with their work and are stressed.

I know right? It's hard to find a new job when you're getting older though. Sometimes, you really have to dig deep and push through even if the current job is stressing you out. It pays the bills after all.

@inkyuboz This is true. I think a lot of people hold out and just wait until they are able to retire, even if they hate their jobs.

@ScribbledAdNauseum If in the end, the company has given you enough cash for early retirement, the better, right?

I worked one job where I was working 12 hour days and was really stressed; but I was paid for it so it was OK.

Yeah, if it pays the bills, then it's still worth the stress. If you get to enjoy your weekends and they have paid leaves though, then I guess working 12 hour shifts ain't so bad. Wait... this is 12 hours a day, how many days a week?

@LindaOHio Oooohhhh a salt company. Mind if I ask what type of job? 12 hours... that's quite a lot. I hope it paid well.

@inkyuboz This was during the winter. I worked for a salt company. Monday through Friday and then usually a half-day or so on Saturday (unless I had a college course I was taking).

Better to find something that you love doing so you will not feel as if you are working.

Good point of you. I do agree with you that a person isn't enslaved to his job if he loves it, enjoys it and is happy about it.

The thing is, jobs are there to earn you money. It shouldn't be a hindrance to how you live your life. It's a bonus if the job actually relieves you of stress instead of adds to it.

@inkyuboz But there are who are compelled to do stressful job for no other job to find. Just for example a teacher who works as salesgirl.
