The other half of my active countdowns right now is a “follow-up” of sorts to a countdown of “peculiar” album titles. This time, it’s “peculiar” song titles. Yes, these are real (I’m providing links to prove it!); and, in a few cases, they’re courtesy of a well-known person. Case in point: today’s song.
#8: We Need a Whole Lot More of Jesus (And A Lot Less Rock & Roll) - Linda Ronstadt
Now, if I were just doing this for myself I’d be highlighting Wayne Raney’s original, but I know none of y’all have ever heard of him. He was a relatively obscure country singer, best-known for his harmonica work, songwriting, and being a member of the Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame. Oh, Bob Dylan said Raney’s harmonica playing influenced him as a harmonica player. (Listening to the two, I don’t see the connection!)
But Linda Ronstadt? You know that name. Granted, she wasn’t a “superstar” when she recorded this song on her first post-Stone Poneys album in 1969, but you do know her now!
She covered this song with tongue firmly in cheek. Yes, Raney wrote it from the heart (he did a number of gospel albums, and I do have his version of this song). He could have given it a more “sincere” title, however.
You’ll find this song on a lot of “worst country song titles” lists.
