The top baby names lists are out this week. Top , as ever, is Oliver for boys and Olivia for girls. Royals tend to influence parental choice and so George at number two and Harry at three. One spelling of Muhammad is on the list at number 8 but if you judge that as a composite name of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed its number one every year in the U.K.
Just as Muslim's names their boys after the prophet the white middle classes tend to pick the same traditional names from a very small pool like Jack and Harry and so why these names always dominate the lists every year. Its seen as tacky to call them anything pretensions. They certainly dont give their children commons names, only one new entry this year in the top ten, Jacob usurping Arthur.
1 .Oliver
2. George
3. Harry
4. Noah
5. Jack
6. Leo
7. Arthur
8. Muhammad
9. Oscar
10. Charlie
Top ten girls names are similar to last year, Sophia and Grace usurping Poppy and Lilly. Alexa has halved dramatically due to a certain Amazon product. Meghan, surprisingly , didn't move up much.
1. Olivia
2. Amelia
3. Ava
4. Isla
5. Emily
6. Mia
7. Isabella
8. Sophia
9. Ella
10. Grace
The Royals are not the only ones to influence baby names. Celebrities and movies stars also have an influence, especially top TV shows, Game of Thrones. We are also seeing an increase of ethnic minority parents giving their kids more 'white sounding names' so to avoid discrimination on job applications and the like.

Very interesting I see many once-popular names are no longer at the top of the list.,
