As the song says, summer’s almost gone. Meteorological it ended August 31. “Unofficially” it ended yesterday with Labor Day. There’s still three weeks on the calendar. But countdowns go on, and my current countdown is a list of songs with peculiar titles. And, waddayaknow, here’s a longtime favorite singer showing up on the list!
#6: I Killed an Ant With My Guitar - John Hiatt
Well, John did drink back then....
This is the guy who also gave us “Since His Penis Came Between Us” (he did that one sober, thank you)!
An early Hiatt song, from the days of “staff writing” and “Sure As I’m Sittin’ Here” (his version of the song Three Dog Night had a hit with was on the previous album), it’s obviously humorous (“I bopped his little head, and now he’s dead”), but it’ll make you think about the “lives” of the animal world (“I’m sure he had a tiny wife”) while you’re chuckling.
Early Hiatt showed the promise, but in all honesty I can barely make a good EP out of the first two albums combined. That’s okay. This song is one of those that would make the cut...and he certainly made up for it later on!

He’s well-known as a songwriter more than his own recordings.
