Celebrating the preposition with a music countdown of 50 songs with "of" in the title. Ranked in no particular order other than what I'm feeling at the time, we are at #28: "Obey the Rules of the Night" by Heavy Shift.
And why not? It's certainly been awhile since I threw a little acid jazz your way, so, since it fits the criteria, and is also groovy as hell, "Obey the Rules of the Night" is tonight's offering.
France, Japan, New York, San Francisco, all had great acid jazz scenes during the genre's 1990's heyday, but, having originated in London, the British scene towered over them all. And England's Heavy Shift, a trio consisting of pianist William South, saxophonist John Wallace, and drummer Julian Fenton, are one of the grooviest.
The Acid Jazz label promoted the genre through a boffo compilation series of CD's called This is Acid Jazz, describing the music contained within as "pure, unadulterated groove." And "Obey the Rules of the Night," was one of those unadulterated groove tunes that caught my ear early on, leading me to seek out Heavy Shift's 1995 debut, Unchain Your Mind, which to this day I still consider one of the best acid jazz albums I've ever owned.
Totally groovy, man, totally groovy.
