Politeness Shouldn’t Overrule Common Sense!

When opening doors watch the other people, don’t just assume they want help.
If able bodied people are so ABLE, it blows my mind how they’re incapable of opening a door for themselves. They call me “disabled” and not only can I do it, I use the door as a railing so I don’t trip over the threshold.
It also blows my mind how they won’t let me open my own doors but if I were getting raped or robbed, I’d probably have to fend for myself. Good thing I’m not afraid to take the law into my own hands if my life or yours depends on it. I’ve had to do that in the past, usually as a bystander but once for myself.
Sometimes politeness defies common sense.

If they can't see the fact that I have a cane in my hand and am holding onto that thing for balance, they need the white cane more than I do.

I don't know all the circumstances, but maybe most people are just trying to be nice when they open a door for you? You sound awfully defensive about it.

I was in the process of opening a door and he was YANKING it out of my hand. Of course I'm defensive. I could have FALLEN! I'd rather be defensive than a doormat. People need to LOOK and THINK before they just plow ahead and physically engage someone. Yell yanking a door out of my hand is a physical engagement.
Telling me I found defensive isn't going to shame me, it's going to spur me on. I'm not going to put myself in danger because someone wants to follow convention.
If more women were as defensive as I am, we wouldn't be so conditioned to be compliant to society's norms, that we are drawn into unsafe situation. I'm not talking about the door, but about women who don't know how to say no to unwanted advances. The fact that I can say no to anyone I want shows that I'm not going to get taken advantage of. I'm the only woman I know who doesn't get sexually harassed on a regular basis.
