Disheartening to see the Philippines finished dead last in recent FIBA tournament. Filipinos love basketball. They love to play and love to watch. Perhaps, lacking world class system that can harness this emotion is the culprit. There's no denying the Philippine basketball system has failed to produce a legitimate world class basketball player or coach over the years.

Let's all face it, basketball is a tall man's game, heart and speed is not enough. Perhaps we need to wait several generations more, Filipinos are getting taller every generation.

Perhaps in basketball like in any other sport. size, smart and skills are essential. While size can be a gene thing, smart and skills definitely can be nurtured. I think 2 out 3, if manage properly using a world class system should be enough to not cause national embarrassment. Maybe there are no reasons not to improve only excuses.

@rossmy well the Philippines was never an embarrassment in Asia it's just that they fall short when it comes to world competition. I don't know much about the history of the sport but can you name a team that was shorter than the average that won let's say an olympic medal or something?

1954 Fiba Philippine team won bronze was comparatively shorter. The Greece team in 2004 who defeated the USA was known for their smart play against the taller USA. The current Philippine roster is by no means short. Notable point guards in the NBA are not near 7ft tall. Philppine players are mostly 6 feet tall and over. Taller players are not guarantee to make it to high level league. Smart and Skills with average height can beat "freak of nature" size any day.
