A strange sort of gift.

A friend of mine has recently moved into a new house and I went to visit her yesterday. She has already managed to decorate a few of the rooms and she has done a very good job of them. After I had a good look round, I could not help but notice that in every room , on most of the walls there were photographs of other people with their children.
So I asked her why she had these photographs on her walls, and would she not be happier with some nice paintings or artwork ( she is quite artistic herself). She told me that these photographs had been given to her by her friends as housewarming gifts. She also mentioned that some of them would get upset and be really off with her if she did not have at least one photo of them and their family hung up where everyone could see them.
I thought at the time that this would be a strange thing to give as a housewarming gift. I can remember when people gave you items that would be useful in the new house, not pictures of themselves.

Maybe they hope she will paint them.

@lazydaizee You never know what people think when they give someone a gift.

@just4him I suppose you could say that it is the thought that counts.

I think it is weird too. I am glad that you agree.

@lazydaizee because we will not want to display the family of people not related to us. If there are photos we would like to hang, it will be ours.

@Janet357 I know that I only have photos of close family , not other people and their children.

It is strange, and most other people think so too. If you were moving house, what sort of gift would you like to get from your friends?

@TiarasOceanView I think paintings are lovely, especially old ones. What sort of painting would you like to get?

Do you give housewarming gifts to friends that have moved house?

@JESSY3236 I do not give very many because the people I know do not move house very often, apart from this one friend that I was writing about.

I wonder what they were thinking about when they gave it. Perhaps they were worried in case she forgot what they looked like.

Yes, it is quite strange that if you do not have a deep relationship, turn around by putting a photo of them, it seems strange.

I thought it seemed like the other people who go to visit her like to look at pictures of themselves for some reason.

Have to agree. You generally get them something that they could use... never heard of a family portrait!

Something useful would be better because moving house is very expensive and useful gifts would be much more practical. What would you give a friend who was moving house? I gave her some new towels and she was very happy with them because she needed some new ones.

I thought it was an odd gift too. We have too many of our own photos and there would not be space on our walls for other peoples photos. But this one that I saw on my friends wall seemed to be in a space where she should have hung pictures of her own family or the dog or something.
