9/11

I was just listening to the album "The Rising" by Bruce Springsteen, which was written in the aftermath of 9/11, and I wept and wept. I remembered hoping that 9/11 would bring us together as a nation, not to fight a common enemy but to open our minds and hearts to the common challenges of being human. When Obama was elected, I thought, "OMG, it's happening." Then, when Trump was elected I knew I was kidding myself. I knew then that many people had not allowed 9/11 to shift their mindsets from fear and defensiveness to curiosity, understanding and acceptance. I think I will not see in my lifetime the world of my dreams, the world that I know is possible but not inevitable. And so I weep.
