Day 41
Promise 44
Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
When I was a child growing up, I didn’t swear. It was unheard of in my home to use any bad language and using God’s name wasn’t even considered. It just wasn’t done. If we did use any of the words on my parent’s taboo list, we got our mouths washed out with soap. It was a quick reminder that that kind of talk and language would not be tolerated. That included talking back. It wasn’t done and the consequences for such behavior didn’t taste very good.
I’m going to guess that the younger generation doesn’t know what soap tastes like as I hear every foul word and God’s name used interchangeably with the F word. Sometimes used together. Even using OMG is using God’s name.
God told Moses, no one would be guiltless who used His name in vain.
How powerful is God’s name or Jesus’ name?
Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (KJV)
Why is Jesus’ name as powerful as God’s name? Because Jesus is God.
Jeremiah 10:10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.
12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.
13 When he utters his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightnings with rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasures.
14 Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
Nothing stands before God when He utters His voice. Why then would you use His name carelessly?
James 2:19 You believe that there is one God; you do well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
If demons tremble in the presence of God, why do you think you can use His name so freely? You are guilty before God every time you use His name in a careless manner. You might think nothing of using God’s name as you splatter it across social media along with the F word. God considers every word you say.
The next time you want to say something, consider your words. Even Isaiah considered he was a man of unclean lips and God cleansed his tongue. He can do the same for you.
Isaiah 6:5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. (KJV)
Let God clean your mouth today.
Let’s pray: Father, let my prayer be the same as David prayed. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
