Turning Back the Clock

I find it so sad that plastic is killing our planet but it seems that humans can't see how to move away from it yet I can remember well, back in the 1960's, our drinks bottles were made of glass and, if you took the empty bottle back to the shop where you bought it, you'd get some money back. The bottles were then sterilised and used again. Likewise, the majority of packet food was wrapped in paper or cardboard and chocolate was wrapped in aluminium foil and then had a cardboard 'sleeve' around it so you knew what brand it was. My mum ran a village shop and nobody bought cheese wrapped in plastic. The cheese arrived at the shop wrapped in a grease-proof type paper which was biodegradable and then, when the customer asked for cheese, Mum would slice it with a cheese wire onto a piece of grease-proof paper, make sure it was the right amount for the customer and then wrap it up neatly in the grease-proof and then pop it in a paper bag. Nobody asked for a plastic carrier bag as everyone who visited the shop had their own bags or baskets. It's such a shame that, since then, we've completely mucked up the planet but, if we could just go back to glass and paper or cardboard it could make a huge difference

I think perhaps the UK could learn from you! A lot is said in parliament about getting rid of it but we really need to take action, not just keep talking about it.

I wish they would fully ban plastic. It is not needed.

you are so right. i missed those days too. also, using plastic for our food including water is not safe. plastic has chemicals that can be absorbed by food.
