Lemon contains citric acid - how can it have alkalizing effect on our body?

The proponents of alternative health claim that by alkalizing our body, we can keep many diseases at Bay. They also claim that drinking fresh lemon juice helps in alkalizing our body. How is that possible - when we know that lemon juice is acidic due to presence of citric acid?

That is absolutely untrue. Lemon juice is acid, full stop. There is no way that it can behave like an alkali.

Everything you read that may claim this is completely false. Lemon juice is an acid and, whether on its own or mixed with water it remains an acid. There is absolutely no truth in the claim that it 'helps increase the alkalinity of the body' (or that doing so 'improves health' - in fact, quite the reverse is likely to be true).

while it may not have any alkalizing effect on our body, nevertheless, lemon juice is good source of some healthy nutrients such as vitamin C, folate, potassium, flavonoids and compounds called limonins.

@amirev777 I never said that lemon juice was not good for you (which it is, as you say). I said that a lot of complete balderdash has been written about it. I wish that people wouldn't keep repeating such utter rubbish, especially when it's quite clear that they don't know what they are talking about! (I'm not referring to you or the OP here, of course, I'm talking about certain responses here and the hundreds of web pages out there which keep posting the garbage!)
