I'm Now Officially a Good Person

We had our groceries delivered yesterday - we always get them on a Wednesday. As we tend to stick to the same day and time each week we often find ourselves with the same delivery drivers. Yesterday our driver was Carl. A young man in his early 20's who's just returned home from 2 years in Australia and, hats off to him, he took the first job he could find when he returned to England... a delivery driver for Asda.
Normally he's bright and breezy and loves to chat but yesterday he seemed a bit down when he arrived. As he unloaded the crates for us to empty into our hessian bags (being eco friendly - and the bags were bought from two animal charities to boot), he said that he was glad we were on his delivery list for the day as he knew we could cheer him up Apparently he'd just come from a delivery a couple of miles up the road from us in the next village and had been just under 5 minutes late due to roadworks.
He started unloading the crates from his van when the man from the house came out and asked where he'd been as he was late. Carl explained but the guy obviously wasn't happy. Once Carl had finished offloading the crates and emptying them apparently the guy demanded compensation. Carl said that he wasn't authorised to do that but if the man would like to phone the helpline they'd deal with it. The man was having none of it. He proceeded to pick up the empty crates and throw them round the garden. Carl, very calmly, picked up the crates and walked out of the man's front gate but this joker hadn't finished. He went up to the van and tried to prevent Carl from putting the empty crates back onto the vehicle.
Carl informed the customer that as he was now on public property, he could report the man for threatening behaviour. The man, taken aback, stopped what he was doing so Carl, very sensibly, threw the empty crates into his van, jumped into the cab, closed and locked the cab door and drove off. He then arrived at ours.
Carl said that one of the most annoying things was that the man had two Jaguar cars and a 4x4 parked on his drive and lived in the largest bungalow in that village and yet he was seeking compensation for receiving his delivery 5 minutes late. But he admitted he really had been scared.
We sympathised with him and told him that for this man to act as he did, he must be very unhappy with his life despite seemingly having everything the likes of us could only dream of.
We got onto various other non-connected stories and by the time we'd finished he said he felt so much better for talking to us and we were the only customers he felt he could talk to and he could trust. It was such a wonderful feeling to know that we'd turned Carl's otherwise miserable day into a happier one and had been the good Samaritans.

People are such jerks, really they are. Why does this man think he is the most important person in the world, he is a sad example of humanity for sure. Well done you for making Carl feel better, no wonder it is so hard to find and keep good drivers.
