Adam's Been Going Nuts!

As I've mentioned previously we have a piece of land between the bottom of our garden and the meadow beyond which is a bit of a No Man's Land. The farmer who owns it is happy for the residents of the houses backing onto the meadow to plant things in the area provided they blend in with the rural environment. We planted a cherry tree and a hazel tree which are a great addition to the environment as, primarily, they're trees which is what the world is lacking and which we need to keep our planet healthy. However, they're also great for us in that they provide us with fruit in the summer and nuts in the autumn although we do tend to leave plenty on the tree for the birds and other wildlife.
This year we've had a glut of hazelnuts. Adam went out to pick the first crop off the ground and, as you can see, he got a mixing bowl full.
The next day we happened to see our young next door neighbour out in her garden and Adam suggested that she and her three year old son Arthur might want to grab a bag and have a little scavenge around in the undergrowth on her side of the tree.
Helen managed to fill half a plastic carrier bag and, into the bargain, it gave Arthur something to do. Sadly, not many kids in our village seem to do this sort of thing these days but I grew up collecting wild fruit and nuts and I'm glad Helen and her hubby Jay are encouraging their two little ones to do so.
We're now going t leave it for a few more days and Adam will go out nut hunting again. Our one problem is that we do get a few grey squirrels having a rummage around trying to get nuts and, although we don't have a problem with that, our cat Ollie is quite partial to a squirrel snack ... here's hoping they'll be keeping an eye out for him before wandering into the area.
