1868 - Cornell University holds opening day ceremonies. Initial enrollment is 412, which is the highest at any American university to that date.
1919 - KLM is founded. It is the oldest airline still operating under its original name.
1951 - John "Cougar" Mellencamp was born. He is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, actor and painter. His specialty is heartland rock. Some of his songs: Hurts So Good, Jack & Diane (see below), Crumblin' Down, Pink House, Lonely Ol' Night, R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A., Paper in Fire, Cherry Bomb.
1959 - Simon Cowell was born - He is an English businessman, television producer, television music and talent show judge, A & R executive, talent manager, entrepreneur. In America he has been a judge on American Idol, The X Factor and America's Got Talent. He is known for his blunt and controversial comments and insults. In 2018 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the television category.
