1845 - In Annapolis, Maryland, the Naval School (later known as the United States Naval Academy) opens with 50 students.
1964 - The Tokyo Summer Olympics opening ceremony is the first to be relayed live by satellites.
1954 - David Lee Roth was born. He is an American rock vocalist, musician, songwriter, actor, author and former radio personality. He is best known as lead singer of the hard rock band Van Halen from 1974-1985 and 2006 to present. He has also had a successful solo career. He has a vocal range of 5 octaves and 3 notes. Jump (see below) was Van Halen's only U. S. #1 single.
1958 - Tanya Tucker was born. She is an American country music singer and songwriter. Some of her singles: Delta Dawn, What's Your Mama's Name, Blood Red and Goin' Down, Lizzie and the Rainman, Strong Enough to Bend.
