"Barefoot in the Park" is a comedy that was released in 1967. The screenplay was written by Neil Simon and based on a play by the same name by Neil Simon and directed by Gene Saks. CAST Robert Redford - Paul Bratter Jane Fonda - Corie Bratter Charles Boyer - Victor Velasco Mildred Natwick - Ethel Banks Herb Edelman - Harry Pepper Mabel Albertson - Harriet Fritz Field - Restaurant Proprietor James F. Stone - Delivery Man Ted Hartley - Frank Newlyweds Paul Bratter, a conservative lawyer, and Corie Bratter, a vivacious, independent woman, have just spent a six-day honeymoon in the Plaza Hotel and are ready to move into their first apartment...which just happens to be a 5th floor walk-up in Greenwich Village...6 floors if you include the front stoop. Their apartment is tiny with a bedroom that will only hold a twin mattress, a bathroom with no room for a tub and a tiny kitchen and living room. They also have the added luxury of a hole in their glass skylight...and it's going to snow. Victor Velasco lives in the attic (6A) and has made friends with Corie and climbs through their window to get to his apartment. Corie gets the idea to invite Victor to dinner when her mother comes over the following Tuesday. Victor takes them all to an Albanian restaurant on Staten Island. Paul and Ethel watch in embarrassment as Corie and Victor dance with the belly dancer. Corie always grabs at life with both hands. They all return to the apartment...Corie and Victor in high spirits, Ethel and Paul dragging their feet. When Corie and Paul are finally alone, they get into an argument over their differences. Corie feels that Paul's conservative demeanor impedes on her freedom. She mentions the fact that he would not go "barefoot in the park" with her one evening. He counters with the fact that it was freezing. If you want to find out what happens, you'll have to watch the movie. You may think that this movie is dated; but it's message is as viable today as it was in the 60s. The film received a positive reception from the critics and received three award nominations, including an Academy Award nomination for Mildred Natwick for Best Supporting Actress. I think that you will enjoy this film; and I give it my recommendation. This movie is rated G. Photo Credit: Pixabay
