Gulf Fritillary or Monarch Butterfly

Many times these beautiful Gulf Fritillary butterflies are mistaken for the Monarch. From a distance they look very similar. The orange color is almost identical. But as you get closer you can see by the patterns and markings the difference in the two butterflies. Today I saw this fritillary in the garden. Grabbed my phone and went out for some photos. I thought the monarch had returned but it was still a good day to see any butterfly in the garden in October. Enjoying the day. Nothing much going on and I am not complaining. Do you have weekend plans? There are many festivals going on in October. None of my schedule as of yet. Here is a link to the monarch in the garden a few days ago.

I just see them and research if I don't know them. Love doing it. Thanks! And they have a little help you know.

They look so much alike that they must be close cousins. This is a great picture that you snapped.

That's a lovely photo. We have monarchs visit our garden in summer.

@caroldm Now a previous generation would be wondering “What’s she doing taking the phone into the garden for? Will the wire stretch that far?”

It is a delight to see butterflies in the garden. I could not differentiate a monarch butterfly from a Gulf Fritillary butterfly; am not an entomologist.
