Robert Smalls was an enslaved man who served in the confederate army. He was also a cunning and intelligent man. He paid attention to the signals given at checkpoints and eventually commandeered the CSS Planter, sailing it to union controlled waters (In South Carolina) where it became part of the Union Fleet. He would become a politician (State Legislature), publisher and businessman. Source - Wikipedia - Robert Smalls (Kevin Hart also did a Black History documentary that featured this man - find it on netflix)
