Columbus Day in the United States Thanksgiving Day (Canada) Native American Day National Dessert Day 1834 - American inventor George Eastman receives a U. S. patent for his new paper-strip film. 1888 - French inventor Louis LePrince films the first motion picture, Roundhay Garden Scene. The movie is believed to be the oldest surviving film in existence! 1977 - Bing Crosby passes away. He was born in 1903 and was an American singer, comedian and actor. He was a leader in record sales, radio ratings and motion picture grosses from 1931-1954. The biggest hit song of his career was "White Christmas" (see below). It was introduced on a Christmas Day radio broadcast in 1941 and later in the movie, "Holiday Inn". It has sold more than 100 million copies. I think that should be a daily holiday or just have one day be no dessert day!

A very long time ago our school superintendent did not think we had enough activities on our lesson plans for Columbus Day. For 36 years, every teacher from that little school has been sending him Columbus Day cards. Quite frankly, none of us believed that he read the plans at all.
