The list of nominees for the “class of 2020” inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been released. Aside from the usual jokes, it may be that they read myLot, given how some of these nominees have shown up on lists of “rock hall snubs” in recent months. Here we go, complete with my commentary. PAT BENATAR: I’ll state this categorically right now. If she and the Doobies don’t make it, close the dang place up. I’m not a fan, but what else can this woman do to prove her worth? DAVE MATTHEWS BAND: they’re kidding, right? DEPECHE MODE: I believe Scott mentioned them in his list, and made all the arguments necessary. I don’t see it happening, but they are quite worthy. DOOBIE BROTHERS: What. In. The. Hell. Took. Those. Morons. So. Long. To. Nominate. The. Doobies. That’s right, boys and girls, one of the biggest bands of the 70s and early 80s...are seeing their very first nomination. According to Ultimate Classic Rock’s write-up, the Doobies have been eligible for 23 years, and they’re just getting around to nominating them. To me, there are two acts who had better get inducted or there should be a Congressional investigation: Benatar and these guys. And you can take that to the streets. WHITNEY HOUSTON: shouldn’t be nominated, will definitely be inducted (pity factor). I’ll accept it only if They Might Be Giants show up and sing “Marty Beller Mask.” JUDAS PRIEST: I’ll leave it to the metal heads to determine their worthiness. Personally, I won’t be upset if they’re inducted. KRAFTWERK: Memo to the hall of fame: stop nominating them and JUST INDUCT THEM. One of the pioneering (if not the pioneering) bands in synth rock have been nominated more times that Susan Lucci on All My Children. MC5: kick out the jams! Deserve induction because of the massive influence they had on punk. Don’t know if they’ll make it. Motörhead: hey, their original guitarist just died. Get ‘em in while there’s still an original member left! NINE INCH NAILS: will probably be inducted to appease the youngsters. NOTORIOUS B.I.G.: Notoriously N.O. W.A.Y. Shouldn’t even be nominated. Not a rap hall. RUFUS FEATURING CHAKA KHAN: I’ve stated before they should be inducted. I’m not backing down from that now that they’re nominated. TODD RUNDGREN: a friend I play golf with said he thought they were “holding back” Rundgren’s induction until 2020 because of the love Cleveland has for him. I know this: if you’re going to ignore his work as a producer then you shouldn’t be eligible to vote for inductees. SOUNDGARDEN: another “appease the kiddies” name for the list. T. REX: T. Rex was a lot bigger in Europe than here (where all we ever heard was “Bang A Gong (Get It On),” even to this day). They walked a peculiar fine line between glam and bubblegum (yes, some people considered them “bubblegum”), and that makes them worthy. THIN LIZZY: they get my sentimental vote. Another band that was bigger elsewhere. I’ve said that US popularity isn’t the only criteria for induction, and their induction would help prove that. WHO I THINK WILL BE INDUCTED (deserved or not): *Benatar *Doobies *Rundgren *Houston *Nine Inch Nails or Soundgarden *Notorious B.I.G. WHO SHOULD BE INDUCTED: *Benatar *Doobies *Depeche Mode *Kraftwerk *MC5 *Rundgren Again, the fan vote is open. The five top vote getters will each have one additional vote added to their tally. We now return to intelligence (assuming you’re not watching anything political). Go Doobies!

Kraftwerk get my vote all day long. I think their influence extends to so many musical genres you could induct them into any hall of fame you could dream up.

Kraftwerk were never “popular” in the US, which is a major strike against them (I’ve stated before that I think some of the voters/nominating committee members think that US popularity is the only popularity that matters). I remember seeing a one-hour concert by them on a local “independent” TV station in 1975. They most definitely belong!!!

@FourWalls The HOF could put Kraftwerk into the Excellent Musicians category (where they put Ringo in essentially for his drumming influence) rather than performer. That is more of an honor for being influential. Remember the Early Influence category where they placed old timers like Hank Williams? A new influence category needs to be created to cover those that came much later and didn't sell a billion records and have a ton of hits but who are cited over and over as influential by the big names. Kate Bush suffers from that being little more than a cult figure in the US.

@FourWalls 1975. That was the year of 'Radioactivity'. I was only 10 in 1975 but first heard Radioactivity 3 years later at the age of 13. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was nothing like I'd ever heard before. Punk or Disco was pretty much all anyone listened to at that time, neither of which did anything for me.

If Pat and Whitney get inducted it will screw up my upcoming snub list. When is the vote final? Pat, DM and Doobies are grievous omissions. I like Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails but it's like voting Steve Garvey into the baseball HOF. Fine player but not HOF great. I am not a fan of Whitney but can state a case for her. They set a precedent by inducting Janet Jackson who is a far lesser talent and singer. If Jackson is in then it's absurd to snub Whitney. God no on Dave Matthews and B.I.G. Others I am on the fence. The travesty is I can think of names on your list, Scott's list and my planned list who are not even nominated.

I think the voting closes the first week in January 2020. Vote early and often. And you’re absolutely correct about Whitney Houston.

@JohnRoberts — fear not, any two that get nominated have at least five worthy acts that can take their places on the list.

I agree more with your who will be nominated list. Sorry! In my defense, I'm not familiar with some of the groups/individuals. Have a great Tuesday.
