Catty Conundrum

Does anyone out there have a cat with a weird fetish? One of our two babes has a strange fascination with plastic. She'll sniff out a plastic bag a mile off and then, when she digs it out, she'll keep licking it. I often walk into our lounge and find our waste bin which has a plastic bag liner is often on its side and Dusky's sitting beside it looking rather nonchalant as if to say "I didn't do it Mum". But this isn't the first of our cats who had a liking for strange things. Twenty or more years ago I found a little white kitten sitting on his own in our local pet shop. I knew the owners - a couple of brothers - and asked why such a beautiful pure white cat was on his own. The owner said that all his brothers and sisters had gone but, for some reason, nobody wanted the white one. He said that he took it home with him every night so at least it could spend time with his own cats but brought it back each morning in the hope that someone would take him. At the time kittens were sold there for £30 - seems like a lot of money for 20 years ago but the owners wanted to make sure that the kittens all went to good homes. Those who weren't dedicated cat people wouldn't want to spend that much money. The owner said that, as he knew me well, he'd let me take this poor little mite for £20. I got home and discussed it with my partner Adam and Adam, although not keen on taking a second cat (we'd already saved one from an abusive home on our housing estate!) said that it was pretty clear I'd made up my mind that I wanted to take this kitten. So the next day I walked into work carrying my cat basket. I stopped off at the pet shop and told them that I'd pick up the kitten on my way home that night. So, Jules came to live with us and immediately discovered that he had a taste for rubber bands! We used to find that our postman dropped them outside our front door but Jules would always sniff them out and bring them home! So what do your pets have a curious liking for?

How odd that he has a taste for rubber bands. I had a dog who love lettuce. He used to even eat it out of the garden. I don't know how weird it is but it seemed weird to me.

@olliesmum They all have their own unique personalities, likes and dislikes. It's fun finding what they are.

When I lived 'at home' with Mum and Dad we had a cat who loved beetroot and mushrooms. And one of our cats that we had at the same time as our 'rubber band cat' loved curry. We didn't feed it to him deliberately but he just happened to lick a plate that I'd used for curry.

I have found our bath mat moved all the way from the bathroom, through the bedroom and into the hallway. A couple times I have seen the cat rolling around in it. Gold Bond powder that falls on it? I don't know. Most of the time he leaves it alone.

That reminds me of something. When we had Jules, our rubber band cat, we had hot air heating. Basically the air heated up in a large 'tank' and then it blew out through vents into the kitchen, lounge and hallway but it didn't go as far as the bedroom. One cold night Jules was asleep on our bed while we were sitting in the lounge and we heard this strange noise. When we opened the lounge door out into the hall Jules was lying on a blanket in front of the hall heating vent. He'd dragged it all the way from the bottom of the bed in our bedroom, down the hall and settled it in front of the vent. He only did it the once.

Many cats like plastic bags. They are an oil based product and the cats can smell that.

This may not be unusual, but our cat Gracie is the lickingest cat I've ever seen! She licks anything and everyone, but doesn't like be petted.
