Today an article was posted in a nature group I belong to on Facebook. It talked about a development company looking to build a "destination resort" near the Red River Gorge/Natural Bridge State Park area. Needless to say, nearly everyone in this group is against it. I'm definitely not opposed to progress. But seriously? You have all these big, medium, and small cities here in which to build. Why go tear down a gorgeous scenic place in the name of "progress" or "tourism"? I think about that every time I pass another building going up around town. There are signs at apartment buildings all over town offering "free month's rent" and "move-in specials," but none of them displaying a "no vacancy" sign. And, despite that, they're building more apartment complexes! There's one going up within earshot of a different complex near a mall. What gives? Is there one tree still standing that these people have to chop down? There's a regional restaurant chain called Rooster's. Instead of building "new" buildings for their restaurants, their policy is to take closed restaurant buildings and refurbish them. Wow, what a concept! I hope you enjoy the above-linked photo, which was taken last year on top of the arch in Natural Bridge State Park. If developers have their way, the next time I'm up there you might get a photo filled with McDonald's, Holiday Inn, and gas station signs.

And resorts the vast majority can't afford.

The term “destination resort” reinforces what you said: one night = average mortgage payment.

Any time you have an attraction, you're going to get development. The only thing you can do is hope that it won't spoil the natural beauty...you can also protest to the city managers.

That is a stupid way to destroy nature. I remember back in Latvia in the suburbs where we lived there was this natural area with trees and grass and a little creek running by. They cleared everything but the creek and built ugly looking modern condos. The place stood practically empty and two years later when I was moving away from there about only four apartments had been sold and I tell you I would not live there because if there are not many tenants that corner area there even with street lights is spooky and dark at night

i hope not. I fear you are right. But I hope not. The best part of the natural world is the hike to get there.
