What a deceptively beautiful day! Walk outside, though and brrr! Oh, well, the sun makes up for the cold. I might take a trip over to our lovely state capital, Frankfort, today. (Or, I might go home and go back to bed.) Let’s celebrate with another song with “travel” in the title.
#6: Traveling Alone - Jason Isbell
As we wind down the 2010s the “best of the decade” lists will show up. Jason Isbell’s Southeastern is going to make a lot of those lists. It’s easily one of the best albums of the decade. Personal, painful, and honest (dealing a great deal with Isbell’s alcoholism), it’s a marvelous album. I’m so happy I got to see him on that tour, right before he got “big.” (“Big” has different definitions in the world of Americana.)
This song is about Isbell’s desire to cease his “wild man” life on a personal level as well. After he finished recording Southeastern he and violinist Amanda Shires married. She is part of the band (the 400 Unit, supposedly named for the mental disability ward in an Atlanta hospital), as well as the all-women group the Highwomen.
Isbell isn’t traveling alone any longer.
