1924 - Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming becomes the first female governor in the United States.
1960 - Dr. Jane Goodall, while in Tanzania, observes chimpanzees creating tools. This is the first such observation in non-human animals.
1937 - Loretta Swit was born. She is an American television and stage actress. She is best known for her role as Major Margaret Houlihan on M*A*S*H from 1972-1983. She won two Emmys for her work on that show.
1960 - Kathy Griffin was born. She is an American comedian, actress and author. She has been active since 1980 and started her career as a stand-up comedian. She has had numerous comedy specials for cable TV and comedy albums. In 2007 and 2008 she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. She has also had numerous supporting roles in television shows and movies.
