Hall and Oates are an American pop rock duo formed in 1970 in Philadelphia. Daryl Hall is usually the lead vocalist while John Oates plays electric guitar and sings back-up. They write most of their own songs and had their greatest popularity in the mid-70s to mid-90s. Their genre is a mixture of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. They have sold an estimated 40 million records, making them the best selling music duo in history. They have had 34 chart hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, 7 RIAA platinum albums and 6 RIAA gold albums. Billboard Magazine named them the most successful duo of the rock era, surpassing Simon & Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers. They have been active from 1970 to the present time.
