One reason is - our music teachers are conducting choirs all over the world, and teaching our folk songs, as these children sing our Paru-parong Bukid. These kids are fun to listen to. Gosh, they are so serious. They must be swaying their hips. Ha ha
All choirs of the Lakeshore Youth Chorale perform this Traditional Filipino Folk Song arranged by Martin Ellis and Henry Leck

My daughter has been watching 3 Idiots for a decade now. A favorite since college, and she still recommends the movie to friends and acquaintances. She knows the Hindi script and songs by heart.

As I've been telling every one, there was a Filipino diaspora that happened in the '70s, when the country was beset by the grim Martial Law, and the Filipinos set out into the world to find jobs. The Filipinos became entertainers in Japan, domestic help in Hong Kong, freight mariners in the seven seas, caregivers, laborers, nurses, doctors, technicians, even make-up artists and production assistants in Hollywood. Filipinos have also become educators. A classmate became a principal in a Los Angeles school. The music teachers have taught our folk songs and our kundiman (serenade songs) to their choirs. That is why the world speaks Tagalog now. How many? As many as the Filipinos have cared for and communicated with.

Pardon me for saying this but Tagalog may be a popular language but not a major one.

Once, when Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom, emerged from a hospital confinement, he expressed his bewilderment, was he in a London hospital. for the medical staff was composed of Filipinos, speaking in Tagalog. His own grandson, Prince William, had a Filipina for a nanny (or maid). Such scenario is true around the world. Even the young princes and princesses of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are lulled to sleep by Philippine lullaby by their Filipino nannies. Although Filipinos speak English in conversations, when we interact and give instructions, we resort to Tagalog for clarity. Tagalog is an emphatic language.
